A huge thank you to Ella Blado, who not only got SubVettes off the ground, but also as she led our group through her presidential leadership. She and Carol Boyle did a tremendous amount of work in the very birth of our group and through the years following. As Ella now keeps a bit closer to home, and feels that she cannot do everything that she feels is necessary as National President, she and her husband Dennis remain true and faithful members of SubVettes and SubVets, respectively. We hope that Ella will be able to join us at our annual meeting in Cincinnati.
I offer some background information so you will know me better. My background includes National Secretary/Treasurer, Editor/Publisher in getting Ladies of Steel off the ground (during Rita Kreul's National Presidency), and National First Vice President. At the Base level, I also held positions of Secretary and Treasurer; and even though I was not a plank owner, I joined Groton Base quickly following its formation. Since joining, I have been an active member, enjoying and helping out in the Scholarship Golf Tournaments, thanksgiving day dinners, IA packaging, soliciting funds for the sharing and caring events that Groton Base coordinates, making nylon lost boat flags that were missing from the Groton Base flag stock, and numerous other events/activities where I was able to assist. In matters outside SubVettes, I have held the position of National Treasurer (with husband Ed) for the United Church of Christ Expression of Worldwide Marriage Encounter, former Girl Scout leader, former religious instructor, currently lead mission work teams (with Ed) in cooperation with two different missions, four winters in Mississippi rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, Florida rebuilding after Hurricane Charlie, former Church Treasurer for many years, Certified Professional Secretary, Legal Assistant for 35 years prior to my retirement (working for the head litigator of one of the largest law firms in CT), former President of Northern CT Professional Secretaries Association, and former Treasurer of Northern CT Legal Assistants. Having been born in Connecticut and lived here for most of my life (with the exception of college years and Navy years, I was educated at Bay Path College and Asnuntuck College. Wife of Ed Butcher who is a member of Groton Base USSVI and mother of two wonderful daughters, Tamara and Tracy, and grandmother to five grandchildren who I am extremely proud of: Kristin, Nicholas, Erika, Melissa, and Tyler. Some of the hobbies I enjoy are traveling, mission rebuilds, quilting, reading, and sewing.
As I begin my new term, I am reviewing our Constitution, Bylaws, and Handbook, with input from our Board of Directors. We hope to have this all in order soon and make sure they all are up to date and in compliance with the USSVI. Any new changes will be voted on at our next annual meeting.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or have items for the next newsletter. We hope to hear from SubVette Bases from around the country. Please keep us all up to date in all that you are doing. It provides other Bases with ideas and encourages them to toot their own horn.
Sandra Butcher
She stood at the Pearly Gates,
her heart was beating fast.
She meekly asked the man of fate,
"Permission to go past?"
"What have you done?" Saint Peter asked
"To seek permission here?"
"I was married to a submarine sailor
For many a weary year."
The Gate swung sharply open
as old St. Peter hit the bell.
"Come on in and grab a harp."
"You've had your share of hell."
